New Sermon Series Begins June 7, 2015

"Beautiful Mess"

Life among Christians can be great. But let’s face it – it can also be exasperating! The joys of fellowship too often give way to division and debate. In 1 Corinthians, Paul calls the believers “saints” but they didn’t always act saintly. You might say that they were a “Beautiful Mess.” There were deep divisions in the church, sexual immorality, abuses of Christian freedom, and theological confusion. Fortunately, God doesn’t give up on messy people or messy churches. In 1 Corinthians we see Christianity not as it was meant to be but as it often is. Yet we also find practical advice for overcoming the challenges of life together. Join us on Sundays beginning June 7^th at Hebron Baptist Church as we discover from 1 Corinthians how God is making a beautiful portrait from our beautiful but messy lives.

National Sport Launch, 2015 Report

This article is a little different than most as I decided to post about a hobby that I have been involved with for some time, high power rocketry. What follows are some pictures and a report of a recent rocketry launch that Rhonda and I attended in South Carolina. 

Launch Report

National Sport Launch, Orangeburg, South Carolina, May 23-25, 2015

Field Conditions: A sod farm, for the most part dry with just a few wet areas and water in ditches.

Weather Conditions: Sunny, partly cloudy, low humidity, fairly windy at times on Saturday, less so          on Monday.

Launches:

1. Deep Space Probe (Not pictured) on an H128W-Med. Delay.

A great flight, straight-up and fast boost, chute deployed at apogee. Unfortunately, the rocket lived up to its name and went into deep space because we never found it although we searched for a couple of hours. Rocket drifted down the field east of the pads.

2. Intruder (Public Missiles, the green rocket) on an I235G-Med. Delay.

A nice fast flight, deployed the 36” chute at apogee. Recovered in the sod grass east of pads.

3. Moonraker (Silver rocket) on an H123W-Med. Delay.

First time using the RMS system where you adjust the delay yourself. A great boost and flight, deployed perfectly on a 27” chute. Recovered with no problems.

4. X-Calibur (Yellow rocket) on an H180-Med. Delay.

A great motor combination for this rocket. Went out-of-sight into the clouds and didn’t see it deploy the chute. Rhonda spotted it down range west of the pads. Used an Aerotech 18” chute which brought it down too hot. There was no damage to the rocket but my threaded screws (retainer) were bent some.

5. Red Barchetta (Italian for 2 seat sports car and a song by Rush, large red rocket) on a       J350W-Med. Delay.

Another RMS motor where you adjust the delay yourself. A great boost and deployed perfectly in two pieces, the nose cone on a 30” chute and the rocket on a 36” chute. Rocket came in a little fast but no damage. Both recovered in sod field northeast of pads. This is the rocket in the launch picture above.  

6. Halo Effect (tall rocket white with red payload) on an I161W-Med. Delay.

Nice boost, straight up flight and recovered in the sod field near the “Away” pad. My last rocket of the day.

“Praising God in the Dark”

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening” (Acts 16:25, NIV). Praising God in times of difficulty is an act of faith. Their praise was God-focused and it was continuous, they were “singing hymns to God.” Paul and Silas did not sing “about” God, but “to God.” It’s fine to sing about God, sometimes we do that when we’re confessing some aspect of God’s character or the blessings of being “in Christ,” but when you’re in a dark place in life, you don’t need to sing “about” God, you need to sing “to” God. No shallow relationship with God will do, only a deep and personal relationship will satisfy. No wonder Paul and Silas are filled with joy, they are having a worship service! And their joy and worship impacted those who “overheard” them in a powerful way.

“The Woman Who Changed the World”

Acts 16 records Paul’s response of obedience to God’s will that brought the Gospel to Europe. Lydia’s response of obedience to God’s will brought salvation to her and her household. Your response to God has life-altering implications too – for you and others in your family and beyond! Join us this Sunday, May 10^th as we explore the impact our lives can make through our obedience to following God’s will. It’s Mother’s Day and we will also be dedicating five precious children and observing the baptism of a new brother in Christ. Let’s gather with gratitude to give God all the glory! See you Sunday for Bible study at 8:45 a.m. and Worship at 10:00 a.m. We’ll have the coffee waiting for you.

“What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine”

The Philippian church was a good church, a healthy church, and a joyful church. And one of the reasons was because they had a strong sense of fellowship. Biblical fellowship builds up a church, makes a church effective and thereby joyful. This Sunday, April 26^th at Hebron Baptist Church we will be exploring what biblical fellowship looks like from the book of Philippians and the difference that it can make in our lives. Come join us for worship at 10:00 a.m. and come early at 8:45 for meaningful Bible study for all ages. Not sure where to go, drop by the Welcome Center in our new sanctuary. Our “One Way Singers” (Student Choir) will also be leading us in our time of worship. See you Sunday! We’ll have the coffee waiting for you.

"Finding Joy in the Journey"

“But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:13b-14). Even though Paul was serious about finishing well as a Christian, he never lost the joy of the journey of faith. What Paul says in Philippians 3:12-21 helps us understand why.
